sixty two! 2 months anniversary~

2 Months since I've been here!

Woooooow.

Not sure if time has gone quick.. Or ridiculously slow... =X.

Today was a rather productive day... Although now I wish I had a few more days before the exam on Thursday........ Feeling the pressure and feeling the stress =X.

OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT Y U SO HARD!?!?!

Maths is defs not my forte.

Sydney!!!!

Energy drink for some studying fuel... Ended up sleeping in class anyway.

After class [4-6]... It was more study time before dinner with Eero + Lyna...

Bummed around the graduate building.. found a really good study room and a lounge! =D

I know the passcode now. >=D

Hanyang Spring Festival in 2011! Curious who will come next year...

Golf swing practice course on top of the Wangsimni Plaza building.. Pretty interesting!

The net stops the balls and reloads back into the cycle. Koooool.

WOO! MOVIES!! Looper. Paid with my Korean bank card because I'm a boss.

YEUH. Movie ads.

I bought this Korean phrase book that will be VERY useful because it's not only a phrase book... It teaches you the stems and structures for certain statements.. and if you have a basic understanding of Korean grammar.. You can just substitute verbs for other verbs =D.

Paying by card was exciting!!
=D.

LAWL.

But exam is stressing me out...

-_-.

On another topic.... Had a chat with a friend today about 'exchange'.
We were on the topic of... relationships and being 'free'. She asked me if I would hook up with random girls here just for fun + for the sake of being 'free'.

Sure... I'm in a different country for a year, spending time with people I will probably never see again after I leave... Why not? It won't hurt anyone if I indulge in meaningless romance right? One night stands + heartbreak warfare. Woo! Fun.

... But no...

I've had my share of one night stands.... meaningless romance... and unintentional pursuit...

It's not for me.

I must guard my heart here.. Not for 'her'... Not for me... But for God - in order to be His witness.

Thankful: Productive study day today... Understood graphs and six sigma stuff.. =D. A relaxing end to the night too with a movie =D.

Prayerful: I can get a lot done tomorrow... I'll still need to cover A LOT of content and also to compile a cheat sheet that we can bring in... A lot of work...

Dangers: Tonight's chat with my friend about 'having fun' has raised concerns and calls for a more cautious approach to spending time with girls.

sixty one!

So... Slept through my morning alarm even though I set it and everything..... sigh... bad student.

Went to an Orientation thing after my last class.. It's a CCAP UNESCO program where I get invited to different elementary and high schools to educate students about my home culture.. in this case, Australian culture.

That's where all the problems are...

You see, a lot of other cultures have very straight-forward things to talk about... For example, Koreans can talk about traditional Korean dress, dance, songs and food.

What does Australia have? Indigenous history, Gold Rush, a flag, Shkippies! (Kangaroos), Koalas, Harbour Bridge?

+++ What does an 'Australian' look like... Surely the kids would find it weird to see an Asian talking about Australia as if it was his country..

But that's where it kicked in... Australia is multicultural. It's a free country with no solid cultural identity.. You are free to do what you want, practice what you want.. as long as you abide by the Australian way of life... which seems to be one that is accepting and show respect for other cultures - oh and to at least try to learn how to speak English.

The closest things to cultural topics that I can even begin to mention are probably...

- The beaches (Awesome road trip destinations)
- Surfing/Bodyboarding/Fishing
- Barbies and beer with da boyzz
- Tim Tams.

+++ When you think about it... Sydney is already split up into funny sub-national suburbs... We have Koreans in Strathfield/Eastwood, Asians in Chatswood, Chinese people in Ashfield (?), etc...
Quite an interesting city when you think about it...
But GOSH I miss it.

I guess with that in mind, I am thankful for such a country.. and the opportunity to be living in Australia.

I still call Australia home.

Jks. Korea FTW.
Jks. Indonesia FTW.

Kkkk... jks..

Integra ftw.

At the orientation

DINNER TIME after.. Went with Soo to this Korean restaurant behind our dormitory.. A reallllllly nice restaurant tucked away.... LOVED it.

Kimchi Jjigae (stew), Gochujang (red pepper paste) Bulgogi, sesame leaves

Soooo good.

YE.
Altogether.. $9

And then... attempted to study...

Camomile tea... Woohoo!

'STRAYA!

After a few hours (3 ish)... We decided to go out and eat again... With Nicole this time.

Jjajangmyun. WOO. $2.50

And then shopping at E-mart... to buy my calculator that I'll never use again in my life.... and supplies.

I didn't buy this. It's a halloween prop =O

WOOHOO!

Thankful: A mild start to the week... Fun times ahead!!! ish.

Prayerful: The exam is bugging me a lot... It looks really hard and I'm feeling the pressure.

Dangers: Not getting along with a person in our group... Pray for patience and wisdom in finding the opportune time to talk things through...

Church day today!!

TOPIC: 'Why are you?' moments

We often are placed in situations where we just question 'Why'?

For some..

1) Your parents tell you that you can't go to your friend's 20th birthday party because they know there is alcohol involved and you go... 'Why are you not letting me go!?"

2) You ask a girl out... and she says no... even though the past couple of weeks + months seemed to show positive signs... 'Why is this happening?'

3) You are going through a very hard time... your friends have betrayed you, your family doesn't want to have you around, society doesn't even pay attention to you... even if you have good intentions.. and you ask 'Why is everyone like this? Why, God, are you allowing me to go through this?'

Similarly, in the Bible, we see a few similar moments..

1) Moses leads the Israelites in escape out of Pharaoh's enslavement and when they are being chased by Pharaoh's soldiers, The Israelites' path is blocked by the Red Sea... And then God tells Moses to hold out his wand...... Now, the average person would question 'Why would you tell me to do such a ridiculous thing? Point me to the direction of a bridge or something tangible!'

2) Joseph in the Old Testament... He did no wrong but was sold into slavery by his own brothers, then accused of raping the slavemaster's wife, then imprisoned for a good portion of his youth... The average person would question 'Why God have you put me through such misfortune?'

3) Jesus + Peter... Matthew 16:13-28. Jesus told the disciples that he was going to be ridiculed and to suffer many things - including death. Peter wasn't happy with this so he took Jesus aside and rebuked him (v.22). For Peter, someone who firmly believed that Jesus is King and thus should live up to the status of one.. his thoughts would probably be something similar to - 'Why are you telling us all this Jesus? You are the Son of God.. You are meant to be King! You're not meant to suffer at the feet of those evil men'

The things all these situations have in common is that...

We bring up the 'Why' question when we fail to understand something. When a situation fails to fall into our logical understanding....
'Why would you tell me to hold out a wooden stick'
'Why do I deserve such treatment even though I've done good all my life'
'Why are you saying that you will suffer and be killed when you are meant to be the King'

Furthermore, we bring up these questions when we think that we can be God over our situations...
"Why did you give me such cruel parents!?!"
"Why would you put me through heartbreak!? Why did she say no!?!"
"Why did you give me such hateful friends, family and a society full of cruel people!?!"

I definitely have had my 'Why' moments.. Several times here in Korea, several more back home in Sydney... It's during those times when my frustration turns into a stubborn bitterness towards God... But I have noticed that, somehow and sometime in the future... As time and God's will unfolds.. Often times, these confusing situations begin to reveal more of the sovereign being that is God.

You see, it's times of confusion and a lack of direction that God tests our faith. And later, through these situations, we are then invited to marvel at God's glorious will as our logical understandings become microscopic when compared to the reality of God's work.

In those Bible events..

1) The parting of the Red Sea by the wave of Moses' staff, the successful crossing to the other side and the drowning of Pharaoh's soldiers.

2) If it weren't for Joseph's imprisonment, he would not have met the Pharaoh who had heard of Joseph's gift of interpreting dreams.. and if he didn't meet the Pharaoh, he wouldn't have been given the second seat to the Kingdom, which was necessary to have fed his very brothers who betrayed him.

3) If Jesus didn't suffer, die and rise on the third day... We would remain as sinners... Jesus wouldn't have fulfilled the prophecies of old and no one would come to understand the all-powerful, yet all-loving God that we have who would send His son to die for the world... Yet still be God in conquering death.

You see, at the end of it all.. God's Will will be done, no matter what... and glory will be given to God without fail.

We must remain faithful and trust in His plans for us... When we pray, we pray because it aligns our will to God's..
We shouldn't pray as if we wanted God to change situations in our favour... We should pray in a way that says - 'God, You are all powerful... Your Will is supreme and my understanding fails to grasp Your divine mind... Therefore I pray Your will be done with me and I pray for courage and faith to freely give up the steering wheel to my life. Even if at times I do not understand.. And even if at times it hurts me, do what You must. Your Will be done.'

The bible verse today was on Luke 19:28-40 - Jesus on the way to the Mount of Olives riding a donkey.

Why a donkey?

Why not a white stallion... Why not a chariot... Why not a Ferrari?

Read Zechariah 9:9

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!
    Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
    righteous and victorious,
lowly and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

It had to be a donkey... A humble King prophesied to be riding on a donkey in the Old Testament. It sealed the deal to those who have read the prophecies of old...

In v.40 of Luke passage... The crowd told Jesus to rebuke the disciples who were praising Jesus... and he said 'If they keep quiet, the stones would cry out'.

Wow.

At the end of the day... At the other end of our doubting mind and our uncertain situations... When the time comes for God to reveal His plans and His ultimate will... God will be glorified and He deserves all our praise.

If you are going through a rough patch right now... If you are uncertain why some things aren't making sense... Take heart... Stand strong...
There is a reason and a very good reason at that!
For sure, God has not betrayed us and His Will surpasses all our understanding.... Expect the unexpected, for our God is a supernatural God. Don't let the boundaries of logic blur your knowledge that we have such a God.

fifty nein!

So... woke up this morning with a funny start.

Around the time when my room mates woke up (10am or so) but I was still half asleep, I heard them speaking in Japanese probably saying how I was still asleep and that it was already so late in the day.

When I finally woke up at around 12.30pm, I said good morning to one of them and then changed it to "good afternoon" and both of them laughed probably thinking I'm one crazy nocturnal guy.

Anyway... as it approached 2pm, both my room mates left the room to go do what they needed to do today and I was left alone eating my cereal.

As innocent as it sounds, it was nowhere near innocent. You see, the past couple of days has been filled with a very violent struggle against my flesh and what it desired... To be perfectly honest, it has served as an obstacle between God and thus has resulted in days of dry prayer...

In summary, today was extremely hard and the temptation was so great it felt like I was going to fall... (For those more curious, you can ask me for the details as it is a rather personal struggle).
In the last moments of the fight, I believe that God had intervened and thankfully, I gathered the courage to say 'no'.. What could have led to days and weeks of guilt-filled sessions was prevented, and it is a victory worth sharing.

In my weakness afterward, I knew I needed some refreshment and a real desire to seek God in meditation emerged within.

For the first time in 3 weeks, I have finally resumed reading DoaGM... and what a great time to start on the section of CHARACTER.

As I was walking to the river, Starfield's Rediscover You played on my mp3 and there was a real excitement inside to seek Jesus.

I need to just admit
my faith is paper thin
I'm feeling so burned out
On religion

I say an empty prayer
I sing a tired song
I need to just admit that the passion's gone
And I want to get it back

You told me
Look for You and I will find
So I'm here
Like I'm searching for the first time
Revive me, Jesus
Make this cold heart start to move
Help me rediscover You

I want to learn to pray
The way that David prayed
I want my soul to burn when I hear Your name
I want to feel like new
I want to hunger for you
Bring me back to life like only You can do
Cause I don't want to stay the same

"Look for You and I will find, so I'm here, like I'm searching for the first time... Revive me, Jesus".

Going to the river on a cold, cloudy and windy day to read and meditate on God's word was my sycamore tree today... And I can gladly say I saw Jesus.

At the river, there were lots of fish jumping.. Big fish and small fish.. Quite a sight XD.

Anyway... the chapter on Integrity.. Funny because back home, I have an INTEGRA yet I lack INTEGRITY. Get it?

...

Integrity... What is Integrity?

There isn't really an easy way to summarise Integrity... But I'll try.
Integrity is never settling for second best or 99.9%... It is keeping to your word and keeping true to who you are 100% of the time.

It is easier to stay true to your word 100% of the time than it is 99% of the time. Once you give into a 'first time', it becomes increasingly easier to gratify its continuity.

Integrity is about keeping 100% true just as it is about 100% disciplined.

Psalm 15 says..

1 Lord, who may dwell in your sacred tent?
Who may live on your holy mountain?
2 The one whose walk is blameless,
    who does what is righteous,
    who speaks the truth from their heart;
3 whose tongue utters no slander,
who does no wrong to a neighbor,
    and casts no slur on others;
4 who despises a vile person
    but honors those who fear the Lord;
who keeps an oath even when it hurts,
    and does not change their mind;
5 who lends money to the poor without interest;
who does not accept a bribe against the innocent.
Whoever does these things
    will never be shaken.

A person with integrity is one who is 'blameless, righteous, truthful, casts no slander, despises vileness, honors those who fear the Lord, KEEPS AN OATH EVEN WHEN IT HURTS, does not change their mind and not a cheat'.

To be blameless doesn't mean that you are 100% faithful to a habit. We are still sinful and imperfect human beings, so failure is normal. Praise God if you have been 100% faithful to a habit, but keep this in mind..

1) A person who is 100% faithful to a habit
2) A person who is 90% faithful but is showing a real struggle to maintain integrity

Being blameless in this case applies to both person(s). If you are showing real signs of struggle to put down a sinful habit and you have a real desire to change for good, I believe you would be deemed as 'blameless'.
So for those who may be feeling like a failure right now.. Take heart. It is never too late to try again.

3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
Romans 5:3-5

Persevere and build yourself a strong character founded in God's love and tempered through the fires of suffering.

In verse 4 of Psalm 15.. "Keeps an oath even when it hurts" is a crucial point.

Even if you have to beat your body to knock some sense into you... Even if you have to lay down your pride for the sake of reconciliation... Even if you have to lose popularity and friends for the sake of God... Have Integrity in keeping true to your identity as a child of God who has put behind a life of sin and detachment from God.

When your mind wanders into the realm of lustful fantasies, slap, pinch or punch yourself... It works, trust me =].

May we all live God-glorifying lives and when the time calls, may we put our bodies, pride, status and belongings secondary to God's glory.

I think it was John Piper who once said something along the lines of..

"There is nothing scarier in this world to the devil than a man of integrity."

I tried to trace back the sermon.. But I couldn't.. I'm sorry... =[

But anyway... Let us keep living as honest, truthful, encouraging and loving witnesses of Christ... as soldiers of integrity so that we may say NO when the world says YES, and YES when the world says NO.

Dinnertime next!

Met up with Soo, Lyna and Eero.

This is Soo! We had dinner (Bibimbap) with Eero and Lyna.

Finished....

We then went window shopping at Wangsimni... XD.

Big backpack.

SCARY AS ZOMBIE. O M G. I should've recorded it... but if you stood in front of it, its eyes would glow red and it'll jump at you.... I got so scared and screamed when it jumped at me...

Getting ready for Halloween so it seems..

We then went bar surfing LOL.
Drank mango soju and beer and ate LOTS of fresh fruit and shaved ice + red bean (Patbingsoo).

A jug of mango soju, 2 bottles of soju, a 2L jug of beer and the fruits = $8 each person. WOOHOO!

How I miss Bananas....

After this, everyone went clubbing or more bars.. So I walked back to the dorm to have a quiet end of the night in prep for church later today.

Thankful: A refreshing day today... One of the most peaceful and deep prayer sessions I've had in a long time by the river.. Until a random man walked up next to me on the bridge as I was praying... BUT MEH. =].

Prayerful: Integrity. The courage to say no during times of temptation and to always live out a truthful and honest life as a witness for Christ.

Dangers: Controlling myself when drinking. Even if I'm not as tipsy or drunk, I should still remain calm so as to not give the impression that I'm a drunk with no self-control.

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything" (James 1:2-3).

No pictures today!

Woke up at 12pm... Spent the whole day literally on my laptop watching Border Security LOL. I was hoping that the group was going to do something today... but not much happened.. they all had stuff to do.. so yeah... only spent $2 today W00T!

Anyway..

Towards the end of the night.. I got into an argument with Lyna because of a misunderstanding and because of my pride.. I didn't quite take her 'opinions' well about how she doesn't like my one word answers in SMS' or Facebook because I felt quite wronged as she was saying that it gives people the impression that I don't like them... and that some of the people in our group have felt that way.
Furthermore, she also felt that I didn't want to spend time with her because I wouldn't include her in conversations or outings... But I don't think it's true because it's quite the opposite.. I want to include her in everything but most of the time she says she's busy or she's not in the mood.
BUT apparently, when she says that she's not in the mood - it's code for "I don't like the itinerary or the people going so I'm not going"... and that I was supposed to be able to decode that..
Anyway at the end of it.. It was a constant debate surrounding who did what wrong and what we should do in the future... She wasn't very happy with me and of course I wasn't very happy with it all...

When we were talking about it on the phone, she said she didn't want to talk about it so she said bye... and I, in my frustration, hung up...
After a couple of minutes thinking about it.. I realise this wasn't very loving and I wasn't too comfortable sleeping without sorting this out... In the past, I've seen real friendships being destroyed over a stupid argument that should have been sorted out the moment it posed a threat... And so I called her again and asked if she had time to talk it out...

We ended up talking for half an hour and by the end of it.. I apologised for getting angry and for my lack of insight into how she felt.. She apologised also for saying it as if I'm the one to blame and we ended up laughing at the fact that we talked for 30 minutes straight..

Last night, after karaoke, she told me that she's going to miss me (and everyone else) and that I was one of the few people she enjoys hanging out with... When I remembered this, I just couldn't leave our friendship in ruins..

It was ridiculously hard to lay down my pride, especially when I felt I didn't do anything wrong, but for the sake of friendship and disputable matters.. my pride traded for reconciliation was an infinitely more valuable deal.

We ended the call on a very positive note with no feelings of hatred, anger or irritation.. She mentioned she was at a house party at a dormitory 15 minutes away with Nicole... And I, knowing that it was a cold night and that both of them probably aren't wearing enough warm clothes, I walked to the dormitory with a scarf hoping it would be of some help... And just to make sure that by seeing Lyna after the talk meant that I wasn't awkward or that there was a barrier between us.

I have made some really great friends here.. After spending a quick 2 months with them, we have grown quite close to each other.. We've been through stressful times, happy times and also times we disagreed with each other... But deep inside, we all know that we only bother with each other because we care...

This has also given me fears of how I may treat my friends back in Sydney if I ever get into an argument with them... I know I can get very impatient sometimes and I apologise now to anyone who I've wronged in the past.
From now on, I will practice empathy and may God grant me humility during times of disagreement so that I may gather the courage to sort disputes out as soon as it arises.

Thankful: Trials, friends and repair. Friendship is like a sword... You can sharpen it slowly but surely with a gentle rock over time... but by tempering it in the furnace, you can produce an even sharper and a much stronger blade - as long as you extract it before the heat of disagreement consumes the sword.

Prayerful: If another disagreement/misunderstanding occurs, I may have peace, patience and humility.

Dangers: Unproductive days... Lazy and wasteful.
