Let me start with a word of comfort...

"God tests us by how we deal with the failure of our tests."
- John Piper

It was never about condemnation or failure.. God holds the condemnation for our failures and he doesn't hold it against us if we are sincerely repentant and seek Him.

But... it is about the latter part of the above line... Will we rise up beyond the devil's lies and seek God in repentance and in our guilt? To be able to humbly say that we are weak and sinful and to seek God who has the power to forgive and strengthen us.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today's classes were 'meh'... Nothing productive really... Just a cold and dry day... =X.

But as I was doing my research for my Global Ethics presentation... I started thinking about the possible points of argument that the class and the professor may bring up against Christianity..

My topic is the US invasion and involvement in the Middle East... In the documentary, there is no mention and no direct discussion into Christianity... but it does seemingly assume that the US is a Christian nation.... Which I believe is going to be the main point of argument the class will bring up.......... which irritates me.

I don't believe the US is the face of Christianity... I don't agree with some (or most) of what the US is doing in the international realm..
US invasion, 'intervention' and unjust wars seem to revolve around selfish drives for resources and global hold of the title 'superpower'... It was never about religious or ethnic cleansing.
Sure, some may mention the early colonialist attempts in the Diego Garcia and the conversion by 'missionaries'... But I'm not so sure about the legitimacy of those so called Christian settlers - who engaged in rape, brutality and forceful action.

Furthermore, in the more recent times... I don't think it's safe for people (especially my professor) to assume that people who say they are Christians are all Christians... We live in a world full of false teachers and those who distort the truth... There are 'Christians' who are pro-apocalyptic and believe that they are acting as the wrath of God - killing and assassinating people.

But it clearly says in the Bible..

3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.
2 Timothy 4:3-4

19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.
Romans 12:19

We shall see what will happen next Monday when I am giving the presentation... Last class I was ready to walk out of the classroom mid-way through because of the ridiculous claims and grounds of the discussion itself..... It is hard to be patient around students who are blindly believing what the professor is saying without first exploring the other side.... But it is highly comforting when Hemi reminded me that Jesus once said "the world hated me first".

After class, I headed back for lunch before my final afternoon class...

My room mate gave me these.. BEST chocolate + orange I've ever had.

I then broke my chair...

But fixed it half an hour later because I am a growing handy-man. Husband skills have increased!

But gosh it was irritating... LOL.

In future: refrain from loosening things that shouldn't be loosened.

After fixing the chair, I had class again and then went back for dinner... HUNGRY AS.

My room mate then came back after dinner and gave me this bar for helping his English project.

OOOOOFT.

Tired...  Sleepy.. Hungry...

=[

Thankful: An interesting day... Productive in terms of preparing for my presentation though...

Prayerful: Small group tomorrow (today)!

Dangers: Anger and frustration toward my Global Ethics class... I need to learn how to love those who hate me and the God I believe in.

Thorns in my flesh....

Global Ethics class
 - Today's class got me thinking again about the legitimacy of the course... We were on the topic of British/American invasion into countries... and we somehow got to a 'let's bash Christianity' discussion... Wut... The grounds of their argument is that... America is the most Christian country in the world, and they're invading ruthlessly with the belief that they are 'helping' savages by conversion. Wut...
And it doesn't help when the whole class is brown-nosing (sucking up to) the teacher... There is only one brave guy in the class - I think he's either Catholic or Jewish... But he seems to hold a firm stance with some intellectual background - something I wish i had.

X
- X is still being very bitter and non-responsive... Apparently X is still unhappy and holding a grudge... I sent X a message a while ago... I think it won't be replied until the next Ice Age...

Temptations
- Temptations everywhere.............. Also been lacking sleep, so focus and control over my body has been weak lately.. Which is why tonight will be an early night.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also ordered my University Jacket. =D.. Quite excited!!! I decided to go with the school colours (you can choose the colour of the sleeves + body.. But you will stand out and it doesn't look right...).
All of the local students wear white sleeves + black body... International visitors wear a white sleeve + dark blue body because they don't order from the student union and just buy outright from the merchandise store.

I have to agree though, the blue looks good... But again, it doesn't look right + you get a 'Since 1939' as opposed to '[Your department]'... For me it'll say Division of International Studies.. =D.
KEEN.

I was also advised to get one size up because I will be wearing stuff underneath... So I told them it doesn't get this cold in Australia so I won't be wearing anything underneath haha... Opted for for the smaller, slimmer size =].

........얼마나 얼마나더.. 너를.. 이렇게바라만 보며 혼자..

Thankful: Good chat tonight with Nick.

Prayerful: Patience and perseverance with these thorns...

Dangers: I feel easily angered + irritated lately... I feel like people are invading my personal space and asking too many personal questions right off the bat....

A gloomy and rainy Autumn day...

Started the day horribly..

Defeated and guilt-filled.

I knew the next few hours, days and weeks would get even harder..

But in my guilt and shame... I sought forgiveness.. I sought God's presence, for the past few days without it has taken its toll - prayerless days and unfaithfulness to quiet times.
Be careful my friends... The moment you stop praying/reading the Bible/spending time with God and His word, you risk falling into a deep and dark world where temptation and sin become increasingly easy to fall into.

The worst thing for me... Was that it was almost as if I could hear the devil's lies when he whispered me into temptation... And me in my weak state, fell into it after a long fight..

LIFEHOUSE - STORM
I know you didn't bring me out here to drown
So why am I ten feet under and upside down
Barely surviving has become my purpose
Because I'm so used to living underneath the surface

If I could just see you
Everything would be all right
If I'd see you
This darkness would turn to light

And I will walk on water
And you will catch me if I fall
And I will get lost into your eyes
And I know everything will be alright

On the way to church.. I brought my mp3 with me and just sought God through song and meditation.. I really needed Him to say that it was okay... and that I could come back home again.

RUSH OF FOOLS - UNDO
I've been here before
Now, here I am again
Standing at the door
Praying You'll let me back in

To label me
A prodigal would be
Only scratching the surface
Of who I've been known to be

I focused on the score
But I could never win
Trying to ignore
A life of hiding my sin

To label me
A hypocrite would be
Only scratching the surface
Of who I've been known to be

Turn me around, pick me up
Undo what I've become
Bring me back to the place
Of forgiveness and grace
I need You, I need Your help
I can't do this myself
You're the only one
Who can undo what I've become

"I focused on the score, but I could never win".
An eye-opener..

I now realise where I've gone wrong...
I've focused on maintaining a clean slate... I've tried my best to make sure that I was as holy and sinless as I can be...
However, in doing so.. a lot of problems arise:
- You begin to form a mentality that a Christian life is a sinless, goody-too-shoes life.
- You begin to form an idea of an angry God who will condemn you if you failed.
- You begin to believe that your sense of identity comes from a life of purity and goodness.

... It becomes a life of pride as your faith becomes achievements-based as opposed to GRACE.

The Christian life is about admitting your sin... your depravity and how much you need God.
Furthermore, it recognises the supremacy and existence of a Gracious God who has abandoned all condemnation because He loved us by dying on the cross.
It is therefore a life where your sense of identity comes from what Jesus Christ has done for you on the cross and how we are now called to be sons and daughters of God - heirs to a Kingdom. We are no longer slaves to sin, but are made free by God.

This brings me to today's sermon....

He wept over it - Luke 19:41-44

These verses talked about Jesus weeping over the city of Jerusalem before he was to be crucified by the very people he loved.

The pre-translated 'wept' here is associated with a weeping out of PAIN. The kind where you feel that stinging pain in your chest. A heartbreak... Losing someone special...
For me, I experienced this kind of pain when my pseudo-ex girlfriend wanted to stop seeing me (pseudo because even to this day, she claims that we were never in a relationship)... It was so painful to the point where it felt like someone was stabbing it with a dagger... and every time I thought about it, tears would come out uncontrollably.

However in the passage, Jesus' pain was most probably more excruciating than mine...
When you break it apart and analyse it... you find certain things..

1. Israel traded their King for Barabbas. The people who Jesus loved and who Jesus would die for, betrayed him and demanded his crucifixion.
2. Jesus knew what was to come for Israel [v. 43] in time... And in 70 AD... The Roman empire laid siege on Jerusalem.. slaughtering thousands of men, women, children and the elderly.. and the rest were enslaved to work in the mines in Egypt.

Jesus wept because he knew of the destruction that was to come onto Israel.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The pastor then mentions his 3am drive to Gangnam in preparation for dawn service..
He says that when he arrived in the neighborhoods of Gangnam, it was very hard not to notice a huge neon-lit sign REGEN - one of the countless plastic surgery clinics in Gangnam.
And then, on the side of the street, a bus filled with foreigners and locals alike dropped off a few of their passengers... who then approached the dark, back alleys of Gangnam - to indulge themselves in sexual pleasures with the abundant 'escorts' you can find in Gangnam.
Now for the take-home slap on the face..
[If Jesus were to walk down the streets of Gangnam... would we weep?]
Without a doubt.. There is so much to weep over in this city... On one side of the street, there is a group of people preparing for dawn service at 3am... and on the other side, a group of young people fighting and wasting their lives away in intoxication.
And beyond that, people lost in their tracks as they seek other means of peace - believing they can fill their God-shaped holes in their hearts with looking good, temporary indulgences and approval from others.
There is no doubt that Jesus would weep over this city too.
But...
You don't need to analyse the degree of perversion in the streets of Gangnam to come up with that conclusion...
Jesus would no doubt weep... because he doesn't have to walk down the streets of Gangnam to find sinfulness... If he simply looked into my heart... I believe it would be enough to make him weep.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hate to admit that even though sometimes I want to do what God wishes I do... I find myself indulging in sinful pleasures and a chasing after worthless things in this world...
Even though I am called to live a blameless and holy life... I find myself lazy and defeated even at the smallest of disciplines...
When he is calling me away from sin, I often ignore his voice and go about my own way... My sinful heart is saying 'This is my life... I am my own god'.
 Yet despite that...
I know.. He hasn't given up on me... I will no doubt keep failing and failing... But he will remain a faithful and loving God.
20 The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more.
Romans 5:20
"I'm sorry God for my recent rebellion and laziness... I'm sorry for trying to live a life apart from Your presence and truth... I need You more than ever these days because I fear falling into the same endless cycle of sin before I left Sydney - an endless cycle of habitual sin that honors nobody... I need You all the more for I am weak and am helpless without Your guidance. But I thank You for your unending grace... That no matter how many times I have failed You, You always welcome me with open arms."
If you are reading this and you are undergoing perhaps guilt or shame because of a recent failure/sin... Please just pray and confess it... When I did it today... I felt as if a huge burden was lifted...
It was better that I wept this morning upon my fall... than to grow cold and weep for an eternity when I have to give an account to God in Heaven.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After the service, I introduced myself to the pastor who instantly knew where my name came from... One of the few people who have noticed upon a first encounter! I offered him a Tim Tam... I wonder if he likes it.. He didn't eat it... Perhaps it was because we were talking in the Sanctuary (no food allowed), so he perhaps waited until he went outside? I wonder... But my American friends + Korean locals loved the Tim Tams... One of the Koreans took 3 LOL. zzzzzzzzz. Fun times!
Autumn has kicked in. Crimson leaves and dry air.
From 7-10pm tonight... The dormitory underwent an electricity maintenance.. So all lights were shut off except for emergency lights... It was quite interesting. =].
So.... It's snowing where she is... Mad jelly.....
I wonder when Seoul will begin to snow...
MMMMMmmmmm... More couples back in Sydney.... and I'm here missing her like crazy.
I get one of those really silly smiles when I get a message from her.
Thankful: Church day. A refreshing and joyous time.
Prayerful: Strength and Integrity... Desperately.
Dangers: Wandering mind and dangerous thoughts lingering inside.
Met up with my sister today!
Welcome to Korea sis!!!
Sorry I was... 3 hours late lol........
We were supposed to meet at Wangsimni at 11am.. but in the end, we met up at Dongdaemun at 2pm... oops...
Anyway, in the end it worked out... everything was brilliant and we had lots of fun!
Seeing her makes me want to see the rest of the family.... Miss them quite a bit =[
But at the same time... It puts a lot of pressure on me because.... I have to start thinking about where to take them and brush up on my Korean ... HAHA!
Iced Americano at a nice cafe =D
Seoul Lantern Festival at the stream.
=D.
Korea's version of VIVID? I guess.
After a long day of shopping, walking and eating... I was quite exhausted....
So we went home at around... 9pm and yeah.. Good fun!!!
Guess what's for dinner!!
The cup noodles were reallllly good!!! Soup was spicy but nice =D.
$1.70 WOO!
Mmmm.. apart from that...
Bumped into X on the way back to the dorm... Struck a conversation and I guess things are well on its way to before... X got a laser eye surgery done just today, looked quite painful and miserable... But I'm glad X is okay. =].
It took a lot... to face X... But in the end, it was worth it. =].
MMMMmmm...
My sister's schedule is quite packed.. But I'm glad it seems like she's having fun!! A lot of shopping going on haha!!!
I'd imagine even more when the boys + parents get here.... =O.
VERY excited =D.
Thankful: Able to see sister after 2 months + to hear that every one is doing fine back home.
Prayerful: Church day tomorrow (today)!
Dangers: Nothing good happens past 2am... Yup....
Crap..........
Spent $110 in 2 days..
What the pisscake...
$50 on advance meal tickets @ Cafeteria..
$35 on International Package + Music CD.
$25 on food + other spendings? =X
Sigh...
Anyway...
Wooooo fun day today!
Sent a little package overseas to test the International Mail system... and then went to Gwanghwamun with Eero to sort out his phone credit + data plan..
Bibimbap for lunch. =D.
Olleh Global Store
Olleh cafe
Yeuh.
He signed up for the $10 data plan a month (500MB)... Which I could have done... But basically the same thing as me LOL... except for that I have a set amount of calling/SMS credit a month.
After that, we went shopping with Soo for a bit before dinner.. Eero bought a really nice jacket for $150.. but it was quite a baller jacket - warm, stylish and perfect for hiking.
For dinner, we had fried chicken again LOL.
Fried chicken - Classic spiced
Soy sauce chicken
All up... $6.. Mmmmm.....
And then... classic Friday night session of Karaoke.. Until 2.30am LOL.
Fun times..........
Meeting my sister tomorrow (today)!!! So quite excited to see how she likes this country =].
But for now.. I am exhausted..........
Eero got really drunk LOL.
Thankful: A good start to a weekend of rest.. Very productive day today as well.
Prayerful: Money management... Sometimes I feel as if I'm just throwing it around... Projected spendings went from $3300 > $6000... $3300 was the ideal spending with minimal luxuries... but $6000 is now based on the pattern of how I've been spending so far...
Dangers: There's a fine line between being careful with spending money out of wisdom and out of idolatry.
We are fast approaching the end of the year... gosh how fast has it gone!
Today marks the start of a new month, the start of a new phone bill period, start of a new monthly photo album on my phone.. and yeah...
Whew....
Long day today... Got 2 of my mid-term exams back..
55/74 for International Business
18.5/30 for Operations Management
75%
63%
Quite happy with the results... Didn't study much for International Business, but studied like crazy for Operations Management.... The test was quite hard I guess, especially for a non-maths guy like me... I'll stick to my reports, presentations and essays =P.
Very uneventful day apart from that really.... 2 meals today..
Hybrid car... Not sure if the car really will be transparent... LOL.
Snack before Operations Management class at 6.30
Dinner.
Oooooh yeah.
Eating it like a real Korean.
It's like.. cookie dough wrapping... LOL.
Dessert - gummy bears.
Yeah...
So...
X and I haven't talked all day... But I'm just waiting... No response since last night but I'm doing fine... We'll see how it goes from here on...
Thankful: 2 Passing marks so far for mid-term exams... =D.
Prayerful: A productive weekend of rest and meditation... Last week didn't happen as well as I had wished (Saturday) because of the rain... And I became lazy being indoors...
Dangers: I think I'm getting mildly self-conscious again.. about my looks =[...
seventie.
Who are my real friends?
What is a 'friend'?
Tonight, I have really questioned the word 'friend'...
Got into another 'fight' (?) with X over a tiny English discussion about learning 'onomatopoeia' in high school...
Long story short, I had offended X by getting surprised at the fact that X did not know what 'onomatopoeia' meant, and saying that it should have been at most a high school English lesson....
Anyway, X turned bitter and I could tell anger and frustration was in the air... By the end of it, I had apologised and sought reconciliation.. But I guess it wasn't enough.... X replied by saying how disappointed and disgusted X was because I had formed a judgement on X's English level. X then said I didn't have the right to do that (and a justified argument it was) and that X was disgusted that I thought it was okay.
I then apologised for falsely assuming and I told X how I didn't mean to give off that impression... As a matter of fact, it was a genuine surprise with no hidden feelings of superiority... X then replies how X doesn't care about what I think of X's English proficiency but that our friendship has changed dramatically because of that little incident.
At this point.. I couldn't apologise anymore as I had run out of things to apologise for... If I were to apologise for something I did not do, it wouldn't be honest.... I was advised by a close friend of mine that sometimes, I should be firm (but gentle) about it and not let people have their way over me all the time.
Furthermore, I thought that our friendship was far more important than me proving myself right, so I had already put down my defenses and stance from the beginning of the chat... But in doing so, X's harsh and unforgiving replies only made it all the more painful - to have received such things from a person who they say is your 'friend'.
To be honest, I am quite shocked, put off and heavily struggling with this right now...
I don't know how to deal with it because I feel like I'm receiving a death sentence for something as small as telling someone they made a spelling mistake...
Just thinking it about it makes me bitter because I know that if X had offended me (which has happened on several occasions), I would simply forgive and forget... But if I offend X, I feel like I need to give X a car and it won't even reward me with a clean slate.
It's very tough right now... Because I'm beginning to question who my real friends are here in Korea.... There are those give me more than I give them, and there are those who take from me more than they give me...
Gosh it is so hard to be loving and patient like this...
But praise God for granting me patience during these times so that hopefully, His love may shine through a wretched and sinful person like me.
If my pride and dignity were the costs in exchange for more of God's presence among my friendship group, then it is a valuable trade and the gains would outweigh the costs...
God, may there be less of me for more of You.
Without doubt, my closest friends are those who care about me... The bulk of them are the ones in Sydney who have endured years of being loving and patient towards me.. Who have forgiven me when it's hard to, and who have loved me when I don't.
If you are reading this, thank you for your faithful surveillance over my struggles and I really long for the day I can return into your presence where life seems a whole lot better and peaceful.
The past 2 months have indeed been tough... But thinking back, it's exactly what I asked for.... Whips, sticks, stones, heavy shackles and the lot - whatever it takes to discipline that inner immature childish nature of mine.
During my time here and by learning patience and love, I pray God may use these times to make me a better brother, friend and (God willing) boyfriend upon my return and for the next few years to come.
5 Better is open rebuke
    than hidden love.
6 Wounds from a friend can be trusted,
    but an enemy multiplies kisses.
Proverbs 27:5-6
When I arrived at the dorm (before this incident), I bumped into X with my Bible + bible study book in hand... X then asked me why I bother reading the Bible [X being a Catholic]... Only now do I think up of a good yet simple answer....
Why do I bother to read the Bible?
Because I'd be lost without it.
Thankful: Small group tonight, God's intervention during times of struggle.
Prayerful: Patience, love and Godly wisdom when dealing with these situations.
Dangers: Anger and ruining a potential gospel opportunity because of my pride.
