eighty two.

Had to do my presentation assessment today for Global Ethics..

Before the class started... A classmate asked me "where is your name from?"

O: It's Hebrew
C: Oh, I thought you were Indonesian?
O: Mmm nope, its origins is Hebrew
C: Haha, so you're Indonesian, Australian, Mexican [inside joke] and now Jewish?
O: Not Jewish... It's just Hebrew
C: So your parents just decided to name you a Hebrew name?
O: No. I'm a Christian. My parents picked it out from the Bible.
C: Oh...

Silence all around the classroom.

It was a shocking experience even for me... I can imagine, if I was still in Sydney when a classmate asked this, I probably would have tried my hardest to not have to declare that I am a Christian. Perhaps it's from a fear of judgment.. but it definitely is insecurity and not being firm in where my sense of identity comes from.

Even in the beginning of my stay here in Korea, I would feel so self-conscious when I prayed before a meal in the cafeteria... Thinking these young adults are looking at me weirdly and judging me..

But nowadays.. I feel nothing like the above. If anything, it's become an identity I'm proud of.

My professor and classmates may think being in that class will shake my faith and what I believe in... But I think it instead has made me more convinced of it. It has led me further to dependence and a real understanding that this world needs God.

That same classmate, at the end of the class, revealed how he is going through depression because of the state of this world. He thinks that this world is so much in ruins that there is no hope... I pray that sometime soon, he's shown otherwise. I know where my hope comes from... And it's definitely not in states, International Law, ethical thinkers or any other worldly power... It comes from The Creator - The God over all things.
This life is just a rehearsal for what's to come. And on that day, it will be a glorious day.

Praise God and thank Him that despite my feelings of loneliness here, He has shown me that He is indeed everywhere. Whenever it is easier and safer to just hide my Christian identity, His Spirit speaks out on my behalf and declares it with boldness and courage.
I know that by myself, I would not have gathered up the courage as I am a proud, sinful and weak person.. but with God's Spirit, I believe He has given me the strength to live out such a life. Pray for me that I continue seeking Him.. and that as the Bible says...

38 (Jesus said)"If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
Mark 8:38

Pray for boldness, courage and shamelessness when it comes to speaking about Jesus. Maybe one day I will write up my testimony... Testimonies are great because they remind you of the past life you've lived and how God has changed you for the better... I myself have gone through a lot of bad things in my life.. But through those times, I believe each and every event pointed me back to God... and I wouldn't be here right now writing this up if it weren't for His saving grace. I owe it all to Him.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway my topic was US-Iran relations - US invasion into Iran and under what basis the invasion was on.

Anyway... long story short, I wasn't very prepared.. Winged it but it went okay..

Professor was quite happy, the class was a bit sleepy... But a good discussion was brought up - mostly about International Law and what-not.

One of the few classes where there is little debate against Christianity....

ANYWAY.

After class.... Nothing much happened... Went back to the dorm... Talked to a few people... Dinner... Movie [The book of Eli].... Youtube... etc.. Fun fun!

=D

Sleep time soon.... early start tomorrow..

Distance

one year.

Thankful: Presentation is done. Another one next week though, but it's okay.

Prayerful: Finding my identity in Christ. Not in how people see me or think of me.

Dangers: Bad sleeping habits again.....

Sunday morning, rain is falling...

Cold, wet and sleepy.... Not a good mix when you need to go out.. =[

But in the end, out I went and took on the wet weather like a baws.

But not really..

TIME TO CLEAN THE HOUSE - Luke 19:45-48; Mark 11:15-18

The story of Jesus storming into the temple, flipping over merchant's tables and driving livestock out for His Father's house had been turned into a 'den of robbers'.

Jesus wasn't playing Mr. Nice-gentle-guy in this story... Jesus acted in a holy fury - like in the OT where an angry God carried out holy judgments upon countless people. Jesus didn't go "Hey, can I ask you to leave please... you shouldn't be doing this...". He flipped tables. He even made a whip to drive out the livestock. He was angry.

3 reasons why Jesus was angry:

1) They were using God's provision to justify their further greed - they wanted to make more profits out of God's grace and monetary provision to feed their greed. Furthermore, they used the temple courts as the ground in which they acted out such greed. Instead of worshiping, they instead indulged in buying/selling of goods.

2) They were not letting others worship God - they were dealing in the Court of the Gentiles. Tables & livestock were laid out in this court instead of allowing the Gentiles to dwell to seek God.

3) It was his Father's holy house... and they didn't even want Jesus there. The very temple built to worship him wanted to drive him out and destroy him!

In today's age, these temples do not exist. We have churches, but churches are buildings used to house the congregation. Temples in the modern day are found in new-born Christians - your bodies.

Your heart/body is the temple of God... Are you opening your doors to Him?
Are you the "God, just be here on Sunday" Christian? Or the "God, don't interfere with my Friday/Saturday night drink-up session" Christian?

THERE ARE NO TEMPLES ANYMORE IN THIS AGE... YOUR BODY IS NOW THE TEMPLE.
How do you treat your body?
Does your body glorify God?

Very self-evaluative questions... Personally, most of the time I do not care about my body. I don't sleep enough, I put it through unhealthy eating habits, force it to act beyond what it should (energy drinks, coffee overdose) or even worse, indulge in degrading acts that should not be fitting with a Christian life - excess alcoholism, sexual immorality, verbal sin, violent outbursts...

Furthermore, within our temple(s), there still exists tables - obstacles of pure worship. Jesus hates these tables that are placed in his temple... Are you going to turn them over yourself? Or are you going to wait until Jesus does it for you? - The latter will definitely not be a pleasant experience.

When you go to church every Sunday... Or whenever you are worshiping God, are there things that stand in the way?
 - "I wonder what's for dinner tonight"
 - "I wonder how my boyfriend/girlfriend is right now"
 - "I don't want to look/sound ridiculous during this worship (song) session... so I'll hold back my voice"
 - Undeclared sin.
 - Pride
 - Other anxieties.

When you meet God, it is a one-on-one experience. Thank God for other times when you are worshiping Him alongside brothers and sisters in song, prayer or other acts... But most of the time, only you and God know what you are truly feeling inside.

Will you clean up the temple inside? Rid yourself of 'tables' that stand in the way of pure worship. When you allow God to dwell inside you, you must realise that you are submitting everything to Him. There should be no area where you say - "sorry God, you can't have this part..."

And in doing so, let your bodies faithfully serve as His temple. In all that you do, may He be glorified.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After Church, I went to meet Jo + Jihyun noona [Jo's mentor] at Itaewon for a much owed dinner + catch-up.

Kebab shop!!! It was tiny though.... Gosh I miss the kebabs in Aussie.

We went to a Turkish restaurant for dinner. BEST.

Lamb shish and Beef kebab.

Lahmacun - Ground peppered lamb + chopped veggies on turkish bread.
All up... $15 each. Ate till full.

After dinner, we went to a Jazz bar... My first time... But I can finally 100% declare that I enjoy it more than going to a club/bar.
It's the interaction and atmosphere where you can talk to your friends that's awesome. I'm not a huge fan of talking in places where the music wants to burst your eardrum...
A nice, cold beer and talking in a table with your closest friends.... Yup. Best.

Couple everywhere. LOL.

Dark beer... Made from roasted barley. Pretty good. My new fav.

Wooo pro trombone guy.

Jihyun noona gave me this for Pepero day haha!! Yumm.

Home time! Finished up my presentation... Haven't practiced.. But gonna wing it. Screw the marks.. I only get a pass/fail anyway.

Thankful: Church day + a good day despite the cold, wet, icy weather (it hailed! snow is coming...)

Prayerful: Another week... But with a new fresh start.

Dangers: Holding back for the sake of comfort.

eighty!

Had a good day today.
A day of rest, good leisure and a striking realisation.

THE REST

Read another chapter of DoaGM - Discipline of Tongue.

Our tongue is so small, yet the most destructive part of our body.
So true...
Unlike physical strength that may at most maim temporarily, it is the words that come out of our mouths that pierce to the depths of another's soul.
From that small organ called the tongue; swords and knives come out and is used to either rip others' souls to shreds, or to carve others into a more beautiful being... My hope rests with the latter.

5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
James 3:5-6

The tongue's destructive power can be seen in the above verse... and can come in five forms - Gossip, Innuendo, Flattery, Criticism and Diminishment.

GOSSIP
We all fall into gossip.. Some very easily, some not so... Me personally, I love juicy news. The moment someone comes up to me and says "hey Obed, wanna hear something interesting about ____?", I'm all ears. And so I've been heavily rebuked for this sinful desire.
Gossip can be seen in saying something behind a person's back that you wouldn't otherwise say to their face - usually designed to talk them down or to reveal something about that person that you'd be ashamed to reveal it to their face.
The most common form is when someone says "Have you heard that..." or "I'm not sure if this is true, but...". And do not be fooled... The most seemingly innocent form "I'm telling you this (about X) so that you can pray..." is nothing but pure gossip, just sugarcoated so we would see it as less threatening.
Gossip divides people, ruins friendships and destroys the reputation of others. An incident comes to mind when I was on a road trip with a few friends of mine from UNSW. In my frustration and discontent, I resorted to gossip and a very bitter outburst against a friend of mine. Not realising it back then, my gossip was so disgusting that even now, I feel so much pain that I had said such things about this friend of mine. God bless Matt Chow for being there at the time to stop me from committing more sin and to put an end to my sinning tongue.

INNUENDO
Innuendos can come in all sorts of forms... Sexual innuendos, drunken innuendos and more simply, half-truths. It is designed to hint a fact about something or someone, usually at the expense of their reputation.
When you are being suggestive with the intention to bring down another's reputation; that's innuendo. It can come as these - "oh wow, was last night one of the few nights you were sober?" ... "didn't know that you even had your own bed, with all the other beds you've been sleeping on lately"... or more innocently, "if only you knew (what you did and how it hurt me)".
Innuendos are a way of concealing the truth - half-truths. We are commanded to speak honestly and truthfully at all times. Half-truths may as well be lies in that case. If you can't speak the whole truth, then you might as well keep your mouth shut.
I personally have had my share of innuendos... Being frustrated at people (sometimes my own friends) who conceal certain facts and cause me grief by hinting that I may have said/done something offensive to them - which later results in them holding a grudge against me and I can't do anything to resolve it because I simply do not know what I've done.
And then there's me... Sometimes speaking only half-truths about people or to people in hope that they get the message of my discontentment.
If you want someone to change how they act or the things they say, don't hope that they will do so by reading your tone of discontentment... Speak to them truthfully and lovingly. Don't resort to gossip either.

FLATTERY
Flattery is like an excessive form of praise that is often insincere. It can be seen more simply in the words that you say to someone to their face that you wouldn't behind their backs.
"Oh, you're such a holy person... I wish I was like you" ... when in reality, you have no opinion or your opinion is lesser than what you just said.
28 A lying tongue hates those it hurts,
and a flattering mouth works ruin.
Proverbs 26:28
Don't resort to flattery. Say only what needs to be said. Don't say words for the sake of gaining a good footing in their good books. Speak sincerely, for otherwise it is a lie. Speak truthfully, not resorting to excessive claims that stray far beyond the truth. If someone has encouraged you, definitely tell him/her - and others if you wish (so they too may be encouraged)! But stay away from saying things just for the sake of the occasion.

CRITICISM
Fault-finding is most likely at the core of criticism. It is the act of picking at others' imperfections for the sake of making yourself sound better and more self-righteous. "I don't like the way you ___" ... "I think that you should pray like this..." ... "Your worship leading is horrid." ... and the list goes on.
We often criticise people.. Sometimes we do so in our minds, but other times we may tell them in person. Be careful of the motive behind your criticism. Be sure that your rebuke is out of love and a genuine, humble desire to lead them back to Christ if they may have strayed. Be careful also with the words you choose... Attacking another's self is like cutting their hair - most people do not like change and especially do not enjoy a self-criticism session.
I've had a lot of encounters with criticism... And quite often, my pride stood in the way, leading to anger and rejection... And later, broken friendships.
Before you decide to criticise someone, please look at yourself in the mirror and make sure you've taken that plank out of your eye first.

DIMINISHMENT
Diminishment is a sticky and somewhat hard to understand concept... It grabs bits from the above four and almost combines it into one. Diminishment is when you say certain things - sometimes untrue, slanderous, direct/indirect or overly informative - that is designed to talk down on a person.
Often times, we as Christians, resort to diminishment and believe that just because it is the 'truth' that is makes it okay to talk bad about person X. We should never be a party to slander, and definitely should not raise our verbal weapons against our fellow brothers and sisters.

Definitely a lot to think about from now on... But I believe I have a more alert sense whenever I am sinning with my tongue. There are new disciplines to be learnt... But definitely good ones to think about.

26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.
James 1:26

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A beautiful day... Cloudless and slightly warm.... But it's now 5.27am and the rain hasn't stopped.

GOOD LEISURE
After this, I got ready to go out for our small group social. We met up at Gangnam and headed over to an all-you-can-eat chicken restaurant.
The owners weren't very happy because their business runs on people drinking beer and not necessarily binge-ing on chicken... But we did the opposite.

Their restaurant also seemed like they were approaching bankruptcy.. when we entered, there was no one else.. and when we left, there were only 3 other tables.

The oven-baked chicken was rather nice though! $7. Ate way too much because we ordered way too much.

The prayer walk tonight was postponed due to Kyu (one of our members) having double booked with another ministry - sex trafficking flyer clean up. You walk around the streets of Gangnam and pick up the prostitute flyers from the ground.
And so, the group decided to just continue the social and headed over to a board game cafe - I learnt how to play Clue, and it was rather fun!
An awesome time.

STRIKING REALISATION
This country isn't as safe as I had thought it to be. The current political leader is despised by the Korean people because he is a Christian. Churches here are ignored because well, they are Christian. The youth take church as a curse handed down by their parents. Sex happens almost as loosely as they do in Western cultures - my player friend's words - "I know 2 girls who are ready whenever you are". There is a high teenage rape rate. High teenage suicide rate... And a very high teenage abortion rate.
If you ever walk around the back streets of Gangnam, you will think that you are in Vegas... Prostitute flyers on the ground, dark alleys with dodgy men and 'escorts'.. and a lot more.
Beyond the innocence of K-Pop and K-dramas lie a world much like the rest... Sure, there still remains some goodness and thank God for that, but it is clear that there is no corner in this world where darkness has not reached...

Thankful: A good day of rest, leisure and clean fun. We grew closer as a small group and we look forward to the next few weeks together.

Prayerful: A careful tongue and wisdom to accompany the opening of my mouth.

Dangers: Temptations remain to play a huge obstacle... The realisation that this city offers so much what the flesh desires makes the temptation even bigger.

W000T !

Hi.

Let me tell you about how I wasted the day today.

Woke up to the doorbell cos the dorm ppl wanted to inspect.

Slept again.

Woke up at 1.30pm.

Check email.

Shower.

Eat.

Youtube.

Eat dinner.

Buy milk.

Received package.

Youtube.

Documentary.

Presentation.

Facebook surfing.

But at least the bulk of my presentation is done =D.

I thought to myself... It would be better to get rid of all obstacles (assignments) so that I can devote the whole day tomorrow (Saturday) in meditation and preparation for the prayer walk.... I just need the integrity to keep to that word now... Despite the piercing cold.

WOOO PACKAGE. Excitement.

YEUH Christmas.

I tried my best to open it cleanly... But it ripped anyway. [10 mins].

Opened that envelope and this came out... My jaw dropped because the amount of sticky tape basically tripled... Didn't wanna spend 20+ mins, so I ripped the top and extracted the letter.... Grr Winky..

Mei-slizz's coded message. Jks.. apparently it's not coded. I wanted to decode it =[.

Great encouragement package... Definitely a 'care package' as Jackie says it is =D.
I definitely needed it... Realigned my purpose of being here...

Fav. verse atm for exchange. I was meant to send it to ____ but ended up writing a nicer letter... So this is currently on my wall =D.

Dinner.

Yup..

FACE MASK TIME. Feelsgoodmang.

Thankful: Presentation is basically done!!! No more hassles for the next 2 days. Care package received and treasured =D. Thank God for my friends.

Prayerful: Prayer walk!!!! Wonder what it's like...

Dangers: Lukewarm faith + not going to God for the smaller, often forgotten things.

WOOOOOOOOO.

END OF ANOTHER WEEK.

>=|

=D

=D

The slizzfest begins.

Jks.

MMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....

The usual stuff today.... classes till 9.30pm..

Headache...
Knees still hurting...
Stress over 21st birthday plans...

But..... a good day =D

Got my jersey >=D. (Pictures below)

Approx 7.30pm.. in that painful 3 hour Operations class...

After class, I met up with Eero, Nicole and Julia at E-mart to go shopping for their hiking trip tomorrow [that I had to bail out on cos of my knees...].

We had bulgogi + pork skin for dinner =D.

Mmmmm.... $7 pp.

Cappuccino cake at Paris Baguette.. Even looks like a capp. Love it.

Thennnnnn went back to the dorm so they could catch some sleep before their trip =D.

Back.

Lion on right sleeve. The lion says Hanyang in Hangeul. SICK.

Ohhhh yeah.

=D

At first, I ordered white sleeves and black body... Because it was the classic and most common colour in the uni... but my friend thought I said all black... So when I got it, I was quite shocked... BUT... The black has grown on me and now I love it =D.
My friends agree too that black is better and it won't get dirty as easily as white.. ++++ White turns to yellow in the sun after a few months... cos it's leather.

A guy vomited on the dorm floor LOL.
Yumm... the student representatives of the dorm had to clean it up and they weren't very happy LOL. The guy was so drunk he was still there passed out after 30 minutes..

Anyway...
Got a voice message from her... that made my night. >=D.

Maybe one day I'll reveal what happened...
;D

Thankful: Another school week done and dusted!!!

Prayerful: Knees still a problem... Eero, Nicole, Lyna and Nelson's safe hiking trip... and also 'clean' fun.

Dangers: Saturday night is approaching - Prayer walk.

MMmmmMMmmmmmMMmm...

Professor caught me sleeping and browsing on my phone.. he probably doesn't like me now...
Uh oh..

MMmmm after class...

LAUNDRY.

Messed up the controls and ended up having to do the cycle twice to get a proper clean.. oops.

But everything is nice and clean now! Including my bed sheets and pillow. =D.

House skills + 1.

Small group was awesome. We have a group social this Saturday at a restaurant and then doing a Prayer Walk through the streets of Gangnam, praying for whatever comes to our heart. It could be finding one of the hundreds of thousands of prostitute flyers on the ground... or past the nightclubs that are basically open everyday and until the sunrise.. It will be an interesting session.

When I got back to Wangsimni, Eero and Julia were waiting for me to watch Argo. Awesome movie =].
Highly recommend it! It's about the Tehran US embassy hostage situation in Iran. Based on a true story and it was awesome because I'm doing my research presentation on it. Haha!!

My room mate greeted me back at the dorm with this box of Jeju mandarins... I tried one... Awesome stuff....

Mmmm

11/11 - Peppero day... It's a very couple-y day... mm....

Thankful: Small group session + One of the quieter days of the week.

Prayerful: My knees are in pain for some reason... It could be because it is bruised due to a fall last week... But I hope that is all... I certainly do not want to undergo knee surgery here and especially at a young-ish age...

Dangers: Taking the prayer walk lightly this Saturday... It should be an awesome experience and it would be good to prepare for it in the next few days.
