46th dei.

HI!
As said, today will be a double post... So here we go!

Saturday was a busy and physically draining day... I met up with my mentor group to visit Ehwa village - a small slum-like village not too far from the city. We visited the village because of its artificially artistic wall paintings.

In the evening, there was a big firework display near the city centre where hundreds of thousands of people gathered and watched (I didn't though.. I don't like crowded areas).

But we'll start with the morning activities =].

Woke up at 12ish.. 2 and a half hours before our proposed meeting time at Hyehwa station. There was a Seoul National University festival going on and there were stalls and over 5 bands/musicians performing.

For lunch, I had a Spicy Chicken Burger from McDonalds ($5 for a set - chips + coke) whilst waiting for the others to arrive.

Traditional Korean dance uniform

On top of the hill... LONG and tiring hike up... but the view was awesome.

Cute cafe.

Streets around the village.

Wall painting

=D

Can you guess what this means?

Reminded me of The Rocks in Sydney.

On the way to the main road... The village was very small.

From this point.. We had to decide what to do next.. None of us knew completing the village path would only take one hour LOL.
So we decided to visit palaces!

First destination - Changdeokgung Palace [A secondary and smaller palace than Gyeongbok palace where the King + Queen stayed... apparently when Gyeongbok palace was burnt down].

On the way. Rest stop.

The palace walls.

Here!

There were a lot less people and nicer weather as it was approaching sunset.

My mentor, Chloe =]

The courtyard.

The king and queen's 'office'.

The leader, Nemo, educating me about the palace.

The ring held up tents.

She stole my phone to take luvos. LOL.

The office. stupid pole.

We caught a couple making out in the palace. NOT very sneaky guys.. tut tut tut.

Don't.

Behind the office.. Where fire extinguishers are found.

The housing where the king and queen slept.

After this, we decided to head to Gwanghwamun where the Gyeongbok Palace is.
The Palace was open until late night just for a week (usually closes at 6) so we thought we might see it at night.

So many people... Perhaps too many, so we decided to eat dinner instead. LOL.

On the way to the restaurant, we walked past this statue of King Sejong (the founder (?) of the Korean alphabet system).

The Sejong Center of Performing Arts.. Running man landmark!

The line for an Italian/Korean restaurant... Wow...

The place we went to. Kinda like a hotpot restaurant =D.

After dinner, we all decided to call it a day.. because some of us decided to go to the fireworks or to simply go home to rest after the day's tiring activities.

Gwanghwamun station.

When I arrived at the dorm... The fireworks had just finished... And I am glad I escaped the 'peak hour' that followed after the firework.

It was madness as you can see from the next picture...

Can you imagine falling over and being trampled? Yeah...

When I had heard news that the fireworks was finished.. I decided to give Eero, Julia and Nichole a call to see if they were going to do anything afterwards... We decided to hit the bar and ate garlic butter chicken + drink beer... and head off to Karaoke until 4am... wow..

At the bar.

MOMO. LOL.

Eero's new attire.

Oh yeah.. at this stage, Nichole was tipsy and Eero was well on his way.

By the time we finished at 4am, I had lost my voice, Eero was drunk off his feet (could not walk straight and I had to guide him home) and Nichole's mood was all over the place.... It wasn't a good end to the night...

It was basically 4.45am when I got back to the dorm... meaning I'd have 7 or so hours of sleep before heading off to Church at 2pm.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SUNDAY MORNING.

Felt sick. Felt ceebs. Felt unmotivated. Felt like I could skip Church and no one will ever know.

But deep inside.. Something told me to go. Something told me it was going to be worth enduring the headache, the stomachache and the 40 or so minute travel time.

The moment I stepped into the Church hall and entered an atmosphere of praise + worship.. I felt like my heart wasn't in the right place. I had come unprepared and I had come with a hard and dry soul...

You see, the past week hasn't been the best... Many times I have felt unworthy and so sinful because of my weakness. Temptation surrounded me and it would only get worse and worse as the week progressed.. By Saturday, I had felt like I was well on my way of walking away from God and into a path of an easy, worldly life. But then again, even if my body wanted to walk this path, my spirit and soul were struggling so much to fight it... They would crave for a deeper encounter and a deeper meaning in life... Which made the week all the more spiritually draining.

During the worship session.. My heart did not cry out as much as it did a few weeks back, when I was still new to Korea and when it was a lot easier to dismiss the desires of the flesh.
I found it troubling that I felt so dry but I prayed..

"God, something doesn't feel right and You know it better than I do.. Please allow me to encounter You today and refresh me."

And then the final opening song came on... Forever Reign by Hillsong.

You are good, You are good
When there's nothing good in me
You are love, You are love
On display for all to see
You are light, You are light
When the darkness closes in
You are hope, You are hope
You have covered all my sin

You are peace, You are peace
When my fear is crippling
You are true, You are true
Even in my wandering
You are joy, You are joy
You're the reason that I sing
You are life, You are life,
In You death has lost its sting

Oh, I'm running to Your arms,
I'm running to Your arms
The riches of Your love
Will always be enough
Nothing compares to Your embrace
Light of the world forever reign.

Beautiful song to describe our beautiful Saviour.

When I was singing this song, despite my croaky and tired voice, I felt a burden lift.. I felt like things were already getting brighter... Things could go right again.

And then Pastor Douglas took the mic and said something... Something that really hit the spot - it was almost like God was speaking Himself..

I don't know where you are this week... How sinful you feel and how much struggle you went through... You know you can run from Him as much as you want, but you should know, He'll always come after you.
God is not here to condemn, judge or punish you... He's here to bless you and it would be a shame if you left today's service feeling the same.

To be perfectly honest, at this stage, I was already tearing up... Because it really did hit the spot.
Me, a weak and unworthy sinner who was contemplating skipping out on Church today, would be sought after by an all powerful God who holds the world by His fingertip.. A God like that who would go out of His way to make sure I was back at home... And all I needed to do was turn around and run into His open arms again.

A truly liberating moment that led into a time of repentance and prayer.

And then the message. Luke 19:1-10 - The story of Zacchaeus and his encounter with Jesus.

Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector - hated and despised by people not only because he'd cheat them, but that he worked for the Roman government. He wasn't the kind of person you'd invite over to your house for a friendly meal...
So when Jesus was passing by Jericho, Zacchaeus had heard of this and wanted to see Jesus.. but the crowd blocked him out so that he wouldn't see... On top of this, he was a rather old man who wasn't what you'd call athletic and physically tall.
But he didn't let the crowd discourage his efforts.. So instead, he climbed a sycamore tree so that he would be able to see Jesus' face.

We should learn a lesson from Zacchaeus... He was a short, old man who probably had a lot of trouble climbing a sycamore tree... I mean, when was the last time you climbed a tree? And even if you did manage to get up there, how risky a position you'd be in if you slipped and fell! But despite this, Zacchaeus still did it. Because to him, seeing Jesus was his goal.

[In the midst of your struggles, what would you do to see Jesus? Are you actively seeking him?]

If you have to climb your own sycamore tree, would you do it?

If it meant waking up an hour earlier just to have a moment of prayer, would you do it?

If it meant not working on a Sunday just to have a peace in preparation for the Church service, would you do it?

If it meant devoting yourself to singleness for a certain amount of time to rediscover Jesus, would you do it?

I know for me, when I am really facing a spiritually dry time, it is often easier to just say... "Oh I have wandered way too far to return to God now... It is more convenient to just let things fall into place and see where I'd end up".

The ironic yet amazing thing however... Is what Jesus then does with Zacchaeus.

Jesus walks close to the tree where Zacchaeus was hiding, and Jesus looks up and says to him - "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today."

Jesus knew him by name. He knew where he was hiding and he knew what needed to be done.

You see...

Jesus doesn't say "Zacchaeus you sinner! You bad man! You will go to hell!"
No... instead he says "I MUST stay at your house". Therefore, why do we all seem to think that when we sin, Jesus is condemning us? Jesus doesn't condemn us... Jesus calls out to us "Come to me, for I must stay with you". To bless us and to remind us that he loves us.

Whenever you feel pity for yourself... feel downcast... feel like the biggest failure... and when you tell God "I am so sinful... I am so unworthy... I am so weak and I feel so defeated", that's when he replies "That is why I have sent my Son to the world... that is why he has come to the world... so that you don't need to fight the losing battle you are trapped in, for you are made a victor through his blood."

You MUST seek Jesus to see him. Climb a sycamore tree today and encounter him.

Just like that, there will always be a bridge to the other side.

In other news... THAT WOMAN HAS REPLIED ME! LOL.

Thankful: A brilliant day. An awesome church service with an even more amazing God.

Prayerful: Honesty, humility and the integrity to admit my weakness without God. God's power is made known in weakness and if I ever say I am strong without Him, oh would I be wrong..

Dangers: I may be giving out wrong signals to Julia... Should cut back so that I wouldn't be placed in a bad situation....

Got a lot of things done today!

First thing done today was sorting out my phone plan.. and now I have a new number and a less stressful credit plan =P. I had to go to Gwanghwamun's global Olleh store in order to speak with an English service rep... it was a 1 hour wait because they were quite busy...

Before, it was a prepaid account where I'd spend usually 10000 won per 10 or so days... but now I am paying 21000 won per month for 11000 calling credit BUT 500MB data with access to Wi-Fi throughout Seoul =]. Lovelyyyyy~

After that, it was lunch time!
We went to a restaurant called Option. They had very nice rice dishes (fried rice, doria, etc..).. $6 per dish with a free drink/ice cream.

My Bacon + Seafood fried rice.

Pretty place.

After that, it was study time at the river...

A path on the side of the boys dorm (left) and the girls dorm (end and right).

After that... was probably the most exciting part of the day... my haircut LOL.
It was my first time at a professional hairdresser for the purpose of a haircut.. My mother has always been the one to cut my hair (but in the younger years.. I used to go to unprofessional barbers).

Anyway, it was quite hard finding a salon who would cut my hair because I could not speak Korean well... I think the language barrier and the fact that I couldn't tell them how I wanted my hair cut posed a security problem, so I had to find a salon who could speak in English... Off I went to Juno hair.. A bigger and seemingly more popular salon among foreigners.

During the wash.. VIP seats to a mini concert haha!  It was a singer that I haven't heard of.. But there were a lot of people!

Bus home.

A shorter/smarter look.. haha!

And to finish the night... my dinner.

Oh yeah..

Tomorrow is my mentor group meeting and we are heading to a village... This'll be fun!

In the meantime.. I shall stop looking at cars and shark documentaries and maybe head to bed.. its 4am.

Thankful: Lots of adventures today... Phone credit, haircut, new side of the river. Fun times ahead!

Prayerful: Direction. My days have been rather empty these days...

Dangers: My body is winning by a fair bit.. Resisting and fleeing is getting harder and harder.

foarty tree

I had to check the previous entry because I've lost track of the days already..

Muhhh..

Uneventful day today because it's the typical Thursday haha..

Classes all the way to 9.30pm.

Used up all my battery on Wi-Fi in International Business because I ran out of credit haha!

Met some new people at Operations Management at 6.30pm due to groupwork.. Fun times!! One of the girls (Soo) is going to Australia in Feb.. I told her to visit the central coast beaches =].
Best.

Dinner is where it all turned fun =]

Met up with Nichole and Julia at 9.30pm and we went off to Wangsimni for dinner...
We didn't go with the others because they were at the free Gangnam Style Concert somewhere near the city centre haha! Psy is a kool guy! doing free shows and what-not.

I'll be sorting out my phone plan tomorrow morning so I should sleep soon... Here are some pictures that you can look at and drool over =P
Jks..

But the food was awesome.

My lunch break. In front of the University train station. The white building on the left is where I have all my classes =].

$6 per person for all of this.

BEST.

Mmmmm.

OH YE.

And then another trip to E-mart for milk and.. lollies HAHA.

YEHHH.

My milk.

As I mentioned... a quiet day..
I'm more looking forward to Sunday's Skype party and seeing everyone on webcam =D.

Thankful: Another week of uni done.

Prayerful: A relaxing but wholesome weekend.

Dangers: Due to staying up the previous night.. I didn't manage my time properly this morning and I didn't pray.. Time management has been quite low on the agenda these days...

forty two..>!>

Quiet quiet quiet quiet day today =X.
Stayed indoors for the majority of the day watching documentaries and chatting with Vic + JDM boys about what I'm going to do to my number plate when I come back to Sydney.. LOL.

Mmmm... Breakfast time!... at 12.30pm LOL.

Coco Balls!!!!!!!!!. magical.

So yeah... all day was spent on the computer because I could not be bothered to venture out, thinking shops would be closed due to today being a Public Holiday [National Foundation Day] for South Korea =D.

When dinner came, it was cafeteria food with Julia at 6.30pm =D.

Julia is a funny girl.. She's turning 18 soon and she's going through her 'rebellious stage' in adolescence HAHA!
You see, for oldies like me, my parents don't monitor me and make decisions for me so I have a degree of freedom. But for Julia, her parents are always in her business (and for good reason) and sometimes she just wishes she was left alone for a bit so she could make decisions for herself..
When we talked about whether or not she would be happy to leave Korea next year, she said "no" because it would mean going back to her parents and her 'caged' life back in America..
For me though, I would love to return to Sydney - to see my friends and family and to resume what I had left behind. But I guess we are both coming from different stages of life...

- I'm approaching the end of my university degree, but she's just starting hers...
- I've had a taste of full-time work and being financially independent, but she hasn't...
- My parents have grown accepting to the idea of me having a girlfriend, but she's not even allowed to bring boys over...

XD.

OHH TO BE YOUNG AGAIN.

jokes.

Julia is a sweet girl, she's got the fresh vibe of a high school graduate and an innocent, young view of the world.
I think we all feel like older brothers and sisters and thus feel like we have to protect her.. HAHA. Fun times!

After dinner, Nelson, Nicole, Julia and I decided to wander around Wangsimni... and found some very interesting places!

A Playstation cafe.. Kinda like City Hunter, but for playstations =D

NET CAFE! Mmmmm L4D..

I had a hoddeok (Rice cake with sugary, syrupy goodness sandwiched inside) for 700 won (60 cents).

We also managed to find a DVD room where we can watch movies for a small fee ($2 per movie per person) =D. We are planning to watch Old Boy and perhaps some Horror movies.. =X.

On the way back to the dorms... we all decided to study a bit... so we agreed to meet up in 5 mins while we all got our books.

The cafe we went to to study!

Iced Americano [Iced Long Black] + Cookies

The cafe is very new (2 days old)

Nicole's Iced Green Tea Latte =D

The cookies were freshly baked, warm and very home-y. BEST cookies.

Whilst we were studying... Julia and I brought up the topic of departure... and how we are going to see Nicole off at the airport in December (Nicole is only staying for one semester).

The thought of the first batch of departures is... exciting and sad at the same time...

I am excited because it would mean my turn next... but sad because it would mean the physical separation from the friends I've made here.

When I think about it... I only have a month and 2 weeks before Lyna leaves (She leaves late Nov.) and 2 months until Nicole leaves...

Which means another 9 or so months until I leave... Wow... Time goes fast..

At 11.30 ish... we all went back to our dorms and said goodnight..

I stayed online on FB and chatted to a few people.. Good chats and encouraging stories all around!! It must be springtime love because I have in mind a few people who are ready to step into a romantic relationship.

It does feel like I am missing out on a lot of stuff back in Sydney.. but I am all the more thankful that I am somewhat updated =D.

In Korea, couples are everywhere... Couple-mindedness is also common (Cafes having couple sets.. Restaurants, movie theatres, etc..) and it wouldn't be hard for someone to feel a sense of bitterness and envy... It is easy to question God "When will it be my turn?"... which will later lead to "Come on!! Aren't I good enough? Aren't I mature enough!?!?"

... Both are prideful thoughts that distort the intended goodness found in healthy Christian relationships...

If one were to base one's worth based on a successful initiation into a romantic relationship, that's idolatry.
To put it simply, if getting that girl/boy is the end-goal of your passion to grow in biblical maturity and to let go of a sinful habitual lifestyle, that's idolatry.
Where is God in that equation?

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
Matthew 6:33

If you idolise a romantic relationship, there are huge negative consequences... I have experienced these myself in the past and they definitely are not on your side.
- You begin to forget your duties as a Christian partner.
- You begin to forget your responsibilities as a family member both in blood and in the Church.
- You begin to change the person you're truly following.. Following your partner instead of Jesus.

Though these may/may not happen to everyone, they are just examples that I have experienced.

However, if God remains as the center in your pursuit of a godly relationship.. I believe this is the only true way of glorifying God through said relationship.
- By putting God's glory as the end-goal, you will study and act out the biblical responsibilities of a Christian partner out of honor and love for the Lord.
- If you are pursuing God and Godly characteristics, it will be reflected through how you treat your Christian partner... during conflicts, after conflicts, in the good, the bad and the long-term vision.
- If God is the center of the relationship, it is hard for the relationship NOT to double your ministry... where both sides are encouraging one another - always pointing back to God at all times when times are good/hard.

For all the above reasons... I should not feel frustration, envy or bitterness towards the fact that I am still single... as a matter of fact, I should feel a great joy, excitement and an even greater need to pray for those looking to start a romantic relationship.

Although I remain uncertain of what will happen between me and ____ in the future, I will remain faithful... that whatever plan(s) God has in store for me will be for the best. I may not agree sometimes with what He wants, but I must remember that my small, incompetent mind cannot comprehend the mysteriously divine works of His.

I am praying daily for godly relationships among the Church (romantic and non) and especially for me to not grow feelings of bitterness towards singleness.

Today has been a good day.. Smiles all around and a determined spirit to continue facing what the remainder of this year brings.

Thankful: Times of sharing among fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, their mature view(s) towards important matters and for God's presence and intervention in all things.

Prayerful: A continuing trust for the perfect, divine will of God in all aspects of my life.. No matter what comes my way.

Dangers: My forgetful and often lazy mind almost caused a break in the daily habitual prayer routine.
