NO JESUS OR KNOW JESUS?
Luke 20:1-18

This event took place after Jesus had driven out the merchants and livestock out of the temple. Possibly the next day or some day shortly after..

In the passage, the chief priests, scribes and elders approached Jesus and said "Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority."
This was in the imperative form - a command... As if Jesus was inferior to them.
If they had the slightest bit of respect for Jesus they would probably say something like - "Teacher, won't you please tell us by which authority you do these things?". But instead, they commanded Jesus to tell them.

The reason why they had said such a thing to Jesus was that, as seen in the passage where Jesus drove out the merchants and flipped the tables, Jesus had acted radically - no ordinary person would have done what Jesus had done, unless he was indeed extraordinary and acted out of righteous conviction.

Think about it this way, if some guy came into the church and started to overturn tables, pews and generally causing a racket, we would most likely tackle the guy and restrain him. But Jesus did something radical - not only did he act out in righteous anger, he spoke with POWERFUL TRUTH - "you have turned my Father's temple into a den of robbers".

Back to today's passage then, Jesus replies to the religious leaders' command by asking if the baptism of John came from heaven or from man... The religious leaders then thought about it and was at a loss for words. They somehow could guess that if they were to say 'heaven', Jesus would reply in saying "Why did you not believe him?".. and if they said 'man', the crowd would stone them for to them, John was a prophet. In thinking these things, the leaders then responded by saying they didn't know. And finally, Jesus expands - "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things."

In other words, 'even if I told you... even if I gave you enough proof, you still would not believe me.'

The religious leaders knew the answer to their own question. They have seen on multiple occasions the mighty works of Jesus and there was sufficient evidence from the prophecies of old that Jesus is the promised Messiah... But they were still hesitant in believing. Though their eyes saw, they did not believe.

In the passage, (v.9-18) Jesus concluded with a parable - about a man's vineyard that was let out to tenants.
The man went into another country for a while and sent servants (three) to take some fruit from it. The tenants beat up and drove away each servant until the man sent his own son thinking that they must respect him for he is the owner's son. The tenants then resorted to killing the son, believing that by killing the heir they would inherit the vineyard themselves. They also believed that the father would not come back to deal with them, so it all the more convinced them of the act.

This parable reflected God the Father sending His own Son to the world. It's God's vineyard... He would send miracles & blessings throughout the ages only to ask for some fruit... But the tenants keep rejecting His servants with greed and selfishness (Israelites and stories of rebellion in the OT). When He sent His Son, the tenants rejected and killed him too... Leaving room for God's wrath.

"The stone the builders rejected has become the CORNERSTONE".

When Jesus speaks, truth and power come out of his mouth. In today's age, there is no greater commodity than TRUTH. It is so scarce and therefore so valuable because we are always surrounded by LIES.

Are we going to be like the religious leaders? When there is actual TRUTH being spoken, we resort to selective hearing - only hearing what we want to... and shrouding TRUTH with a doubtful "I don't know"?
Are we going to say No to Jesus? or are we going to Know Jesus?

We are at our strongest when we are 100% dependent on God. When we don't rely on our own power and our own understanding... but His. The more we depend on God, the stronger we are.

A beautiful day... Finally, a clear sky and a nice orange contrast with the trees. Next season may see snow in this landscape.

When I got back to my dorm and was about to head off to dinner, I found out that my Havainas broke...
It was definitely one of my room mates.. Perhaps they stepped on it or something... No one owned up to it and I was very frustrated.

A lot of things weren't going well already and this just added on to the frustration.

I quickly thought about solutions because these sandals were frequently used for in-dorm walking so it wouldn't be long before I next used it...

The damage is as shown below and there were only a few ways to fix it...

1) Bread clip on the bottom part to secure it - FAIL, Korean bread clip holes are huge for some reason...
2) Superglue - FAIL, no superglue
3) Duct Tape - FAIL, no duct tape
4) Rubber band - SUCCESS.

It worked.

My Korean bread.

It was nice anyway. Sweet white bread. =].

After fixing it and focusing on the more positive things in my life... I felt a lot better... The past couple of days hasn't been easy...

A lot things have happened and I've found myself less patient most of the days...

Thankful: A nice weekend. Thanksgiving dinner and Church. Somewhat relaxing but I had hoped it could have been a tiny bit more.

Prayerful: Approaching finals... Lots of assignments and exams.... Buildup of stress.

Dangers: I have been feeling very spiritually detached... I know something's not right.

Friday was filled with.... boredom and non-activity until dinnertime.

Soo, Eero and I agreed to meet up to help Soo with her English exam.. But she didn't even study for it so we didn't end up studying when we met up.. LOL.

So we went to E-mart to buy some moisturiser for my foot as it has begun getting very dry due to the weather.

After that, we had Albap [Salmon roe + rice] for dinner and headed over to the bar next door.

The bar was called Beer Friends.. Quite nice! It had a lot of international beers but was rather pricey...

Asahi - 7000 won
Tsingtao - 6000 won
Heineken - 6000 won
Guinness - 8000 won
VB - 7500 won

but...

Korean beers - 2500 won
Soju - 2500 won

I ended up taking these - $8 altogether.

Mmmmmm bar snacks.

I made a new friend.

Being slizzbuckets.

Funnily enough, I was the slizzbucket that night...
After drinking those beers and soju... I felt very tired but the others wanted to go to another bar.. So off we went to TLC Bar... A nice-ish bar... but I don't remember much because I ended up sleeping inside LOL.

After that, we went back to the dorm by taxi because I couldn't be bothered walking... Came home at around 1am... But was extremely tired and had a huge headache.

SATURDAY

Met up with my mentor/buddy at lunchtime at Gangnam for some back-street inspections to see what it's like in the daytime... Quite interesting. Very different to the main street.

It's Lennox.

A Cafe that sold Burritos =O. Good OJ.

We stayed for around 2 hours and then I headed off to Church for Thanksgiving Banquet.

Crowded staircase.

Crowded hall.

Yeah..

The table deco.

Guy and girl looking to the right.

Guy and girl looking to the left.

This is the hall where we have our service.. =D. Turned into a dining hall. WOO!

The MC was quite funny.

MC: I've had people ask me if we are going to have wine with the turkey and ham and saying that Jesus drank wine, so is it okay if we had wine? I would therefore now like to happily announce that whilst you are enjoying your dinner, I will ask those who would like wine to put up their hands and Pastor Doug will come around and pray for you and your alcoholism. Thank you.

We also had raffle prizes...

MC: We have lots of cool prizes guys! Be excited! First up - an all expenses paid cruise for two.... to Pastor Doug's house.

MC: Okayyyy next prize!!! Probably our most exciting one! It's two front row tickets.... to tomorrow's service.

Lining up for the food.

Mashed potato + gravy, stuffing, beans, corn, ham, turkey and cranberry sauce.

Pecan Pie. mmmm.

An awesome day!

When I got home, I worked a bit on my presentation due Monday... Most of it is done, so I'm quite happy. =].

It's 5.41am now though, so I should probably head off to sleep.

Today was my first Thanksgiving dinner [American Style] and it was quite a nice experience.
We all have something to be thankful for. If we would only stop for a minute and think about all the blessings in our lives, it would perhaps make us happier and feel more grateful toward the One who has blessed us so richly..

Health, money, education, shelter, family, friendships, food, sufficiency and over-sufficiency, abilities, technology, toilet paper, clean water... oh I can go on forever... =]

Thankful: Rich blessings and sufficiency in Christ.

Prayerful: Being thankful for everything. Anything that comes from God is good.

Dangers: Body has been weak lately due to lack of sleep and rest.... And when the body is weak, the mind and its ability to control is also weakened...

Double post tomorrow... Crap...

eighty five.

To my one and only Charlie Whiskey Dog,

Although your presence was a temporary blessing to us..
Your impact in our lives an eternal one.

I still remember picking you up in the Tarago when you were still a puppy.
I still remember you humping my leg.
Chasing me around the house.
Sleeping on my lap on cold nights.
Jumping on my bed in the morning when I used to sleep on a single bed.
Your bushy tail.
Me talking to you about my girl troubles and you licking my cheek telling me that things would be okay..

The saddest thing is that.. the day I come home.. 7 months from now.. the moment I unlock the front door...

I won't be hearing you barking at me.
I won't be hearing those clumsy claws slipping on the tile floor as you rush to see who it is.
Your tail won't be wagging when you see me.
I won't be feeling your legs pushing onto mine as you meet me.
I wouldn't be seeing your cosy little dog bed as I enter the dining room.
Nor your food and water bowl next to the back door.
I wouldn't be able to microwave your dinner and making sure it's the right temperature.
I wouldn't be seeing your curious head poking into my room and have staring contests with you.
I won't be hearing my sister call out "OBED" as I interrupt your peaceful evenings.
I won't be able to chase you around the house and steal cuddles from you on cold nights.
I won't be able to give you random baths and scare you with water.
...
...
And you won't be hearing me call out your name anymore.
...
'Cos you won't be there.

I thank God for the gift of animal companionship... pets.
I thank God that He took you away quickly and without much suffering.
I thank God that He saved me the pain of having to see your weak state in your final days... when you're usually the most energetic in the house.
I thank God that he spared me the pain of having to bury you and carry your inanimate body to your resting place.
I thank God that He has blessed me with you in my life.

He gives and takes away...

10 In his hand is the life of every creature
and the breath of all mankind.
Job 12:10

But mostly... I thank God that He is the God He is...

The One a single sparrow He does not forget,
Every flower He gives dress
Every man, a companion
Every day, a new blessing and a new beginning.

Mmmmmmmmm

Just another laundry day. Hahahaha....

Had class till 12pm.. Then lunch... Then Laundry... Then nap.. Then small group XD.

Small group was rather small today.. We were on the topic of godliness + traits of a leader. 'Twas good.. Although my heart wasn't at peace today... I was lacking patience and it got the better of me today..

But in the end it was okay, and thank God for giving me an inner peace.. On-the-spot prayers are awesome... =].

On the way back and when I got back to the room, I had a chat with a friend about 'friendships' and just talked about our experiences and struggles with it.

It really did get me thinking... Even back in Sydney, there were definitely times where I was unsure of who my real friends were... What distinguishes person A from person C, and why person D isn't giving me as much attention as person B.

12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.
John 15:12-15

Love each other as Jesus has loved you... Jesus did a lot of things for the people he loved (even though most of those people despised him)... One of the greatest however, is as v.13 says... He died for them.

He made sacrifices for his friends.. He was selfless for the sake of those he loved.

Would you do the same for your friends?

Would you put money, fuel, dignity, academics and convenience second for the sake of your friends?

It definitely got me thinking... I have failed countless times in terms of faithfulness to my friends... Now that I am here, several thousand miles away, I look back and am ashamed.
I now long for something that I took for granted in the past yet was so easily obtainable.
A few months back, I could simply call a few people and organise an impromptu dinner... Or drive over to their houses just to have a cup of coffee.
How I wish I could do it now... But I'm afraid the physical distance and the financial burden is too great... But in 7 months time... 7 months time I will be able to see my friends again.

In conclusion, I have found quantifying friendships to be unhelpful. You don't measure friendship by how many times you see them. Instead, you should measure it by the quality within the times and experiences you share together and that no matter how many days go by without seeing each other, none of that affects the next encounter with them.

But I also encourage you... Be prepared to make sacrifices for your friends. Don't always take.
In one of my MGMT classes last year, on the topic of Negotiation... You're only as valuable as the offer you make to the other person; if your offer does not weigh up to the other party, don't expect them to be staying for long.

In reality, it is very applicable to friendships... If someone right now is really pursuing to build a friendship with you but you are constantly turning them down or your response is half-hearted... Don't be surprised when they lose interest in you and find another person/group of people who actually appreciate their efforts.

Interestingly, but on a separate topic, today's small group session also covered hypocrisy.
God detests hypocrites... Definitely a trait that no one should pursue..
For that reason, I have become more alert of the words that come out of my mouth. It is easier to find fault in someone else than it is in yourself. Furthermore, it is more common to look at another person judgmentally than it is to evaluate yourself judgmentally.

I must be wary of what I say and whether or not I am acting out what I am saying. I do not want to live a double-life so if you guys feel a hint that I am... Let me know and rebuke me... Before my own words destroy me.

Thankful: Fruitful small group session and a valuable chat.

Prayerful: Humility, integrity and wisdom of speech.

Dangers: My impatience almost caused me to act out in anger... If it weren't for God's intervention, it could have costed me a friend.

Tim Tams on sale!!! $5.50.... for one. Wut.

Hot packssssss

It's very warm XD. Almost as warm as this laptop =X.

So... It has begun snowing here in Korea...

Temperatures have reached 0 and even below 0 on cold mornings such as this morning and Thursday..

I've yet to see snow in daylight and I can say I'm looking forward to it!

I suggested to her that one day we'd build a snowman together... Maybe one day... Maybe she's the reason I'm looking forward to seeing snowfall...

Stay warm!

Thankful: A warm shelter, a roof over my head, warm food and warm relationships during cold seasons.

Prayerful: Small groups tomorrow. I hope I'll have enough energy and that the cold won't stop me... You have no idea how tempting it is to just sleep in.... It's so warm indoors... haha...

Dangers: A potential distraction in the near future... In the form of an inner longing for physical companionship.
